The dramatic designs of Léon Bakst, heavily influenced Parisian fashion when they debuted. Paul Poiret, for instance, was extremely influenced by Léon Bakst's costume designs. Bakst's designs with bold hues, embroideries, heavy appliqué, 'harem' silhouettes was known as Orientalism. Of coarse La Casati found out about him and dropped Fortuny as his modern designs were not flamboyant enough for her decadent taste. He was designing for The Ballets Russes at the time. When I was preparing for my show the original theme/moodboard I did had a definite Hungarian vibe. I decided against doing this look for my show but I adore this look.
