http://galadarling.comWelcome to a world of tattered silk, stained lace & decadently distressed velvet. A world where girls eyes are always fringed with magical false eyelashes, their hair is always elegantly tousled, & they wear elaborate headpieces while lounging around the house.
This is the world of Dawn Younger-Smith, owner of The Boudoir Queen, where disheveled opulence reigns. Citing the likes of Marchesa Louisa Casati, Kiki De Montparnasse & Erte as style icons & influences, when she isn’t busy designing stage costumes for celebrities — she’s currently creating outfits for The Veronicas tour — Dawn has been known to delight onlookers in a dress made from Aleister Crowley collage!
I pounced on her for 10 quick questions. I like to imagine her writing her answers while wearing an immense feathered headdress!
Who are you & and what do you do?
Dawn Younger-Smith: I am Dawn Younger-Smith, owner of the company Boudoir Queen. I am a designer, artist & collector of the rare & unusual.
Who & what are you currently inspired by? Dawn Younger-Smith: My assistant Shannon inspires me & I’m sort of into Bette Davis right now.
Who do you design for? Dawn Younger-Smith: Boudoir Queen designs stage clothing for many recording artists and actresses. Right now we are designing clothes for The Veronicas tour.
What is your current favorite outfit? Dawn Younger-Smith: My favorite outfit is our new Cherry Bomb ruby lined jackets. I wear them with everything and always faboo shoes. I’m also very much into my Piano Shawl dresses with our BQ silver metallic lace turbans.
What’s your ultimate style tip? Dawn Younger-Smith: In the famous words of Coco Chanel “In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different”… So be different!
Where’s your favorite place to relax? Dawn Younger-Smith: I have a fabulous room in my house filled with all my 1920’s lingerie collection & my boudoir dolls. The room makes me feel relaxed. I also like to lounge at The Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles for days on end. I love the vibe.
Who are your style icons? Dawn Younger-Smith: Marchesa Casati, Paul Poiret, Anita Pallenberg, Edie Sedgwick & Lou Doillon just to name a few.
What do you love to splurge on? Dawn Younger-Smith: Christian Louboutins & lots of beauty products. I was a celebrity make-up artist for many years & I am enjoying buying lots of Illamasqua. I also buy a godawful amount of vintage clothing & textiles. It’s my passion.
Where can we find your pieces? Dawn Younger-Smith: The Boudoir Queen
What’s your next big dream? Dawn Younger-Smith: Going on tour with my husband!

Many alternative rock groups have cited Shonen Knife as a favorite of theirs, and the resulting word-of-mouth gained significant exposure for the band. They were also featured on CNN's This Week in Japan. In 1989, Gasatanka Records released a double-album tribute entitled Every Band Has a Shonen Knife Who Loves Them, which featured renditions of the group's songs by a number of contributing bands, including Redd Kross, Sonic Youth, L7, The Mr. T Experience, and Babes in Toyland (the last two on non-CD formats only). The tribute album's success led to Shonen Knife's first American tour in 1990, and group later signed with Virgin Records in 1992.
The group had a song called "Buttercup (I'm a Supergirl)" that appeared on a Powerpuff Girls soundtrack. A Shonen Knife cover of The Carpenters' hit "Top of the World" was used in the 1998 remake of "The Parent Trap", a US television commercial for Microsoft, the credits music for the documentary Double Dare, as the ending song for the movie "The Last Supper" and in summer 2006 by the BBC in UK TV trailers for a season of nature programmes. It was also featured on the album "If I were a Carpenter" along with Carpenter covers by American Music Club, Babes in Toyland, Matthew Sweet, Red Kross and others.
Shonen Knife's most recent album fun! fun! fun! was released in Japan on July 6, 2007 to coincide with the band's 25th anniversary. A new Album entitled Super Group was released in Japan on November 7, 2008

As cover girls go, she hardly fits the stereotype.
But 15-stone Beth Ditto showed no shyness as she posed naked for Love magazine.
Holding up a pink ruffled skirt to protect her modesty, the Gossip frontwoman struck a sultry pose for the magazine’s launch issue.
Editor-in-Chief Katie Grand promised the publication would be ‘very curvy’ and that ‘no one is a sample size in the whole issue’, and with Miss Ditto on the cover she seems to have kept her word to the extreme.
Icon: Gossip singer Beth Ditto in all her naked glory
With red hair and black lips, the openly gay singer closed her eyes and pouted for her glamorous photoshoot.
Her tattoos, one of which reads ‘Mama’, are also clearly visible on her pale skin.
‘She says the wrong things. She looks the wrong way,’ Grand writes in her first editor’s letter.
‘Isn’t it confounding and amazing to have an iconic figure…who doesn’t have a 25-inch waist?
‘She is happy with who she is and the way she is.’
It is not the first time Miss Ditto, 27, has stripped off for a magazine photo shoot.
In 2007 she posed naked, with hairy armpits, on the cover of music magazine NME.
Dolled up: Miss Ditto dresses up for the press
That same year she is said to have turned down a design deal with high street giant Topshop after criticising their ‘limited’ sizing policy.
The singer, who called herself a ‘fat, feminist lesbian from Arkansas’, has previously lashed out at size zero celebs and blamed gay men in the fashion industry for the size zero trend.
There should be some boudoir Queen in this issue of Love so I've been told?

Looks like a fab party at the Private Gaucho Club in London. Here's of couple photos of the night that were all over the tabloids. I'm loving the boa and the shoes. The boa looks like one we sent out for Italian Vogue...sorta. The skirt is solid jet with fabulous Ostrich feather and bow at the hem. She's also wearing her drippy jet arm bands and jet collar. The purple crown I left when I was in L.A. She looks awesome for this event and was the hit of the party so I've been told. Elle woman of the year rockin ' BQ pretty cool eh?

So today was just another busy work day. Patricia Vonne stopped by so that we could get started on some stage clothes for her. The funny thing was she was wearing the skirt that she bought from me a couple of years ago. The one that was in the Austin Monthly Magazine feature of the UNDERWATER shoot. I was wearing a pair of jeans that were featured in ELLE Magazine that I haven't worn in probably two years. I was saving them for some strange reason and decided to just throw them on. It was a casual day cleaning and getting all of our work for the week in order. It was the perfect moment for a photo! So Teresa had to stand on a chair outside and start clicking. I thought they were cute especially since I haven't any make-up on and Patricia was just running errands. Patricia is the new face of Boudoir Queen and modeling exclusively for us. We are thrilled!
I met with pickers today and bought some pretty amazing new textiles and jewels and even some Boudoir Doll related treasures . I can't wait to make them into something fabulous. We need at least 50 pieces to take to L.A.
Speaking of L.A I'm glad my son is here. There was an fairly large earthquake there today. I was in the northridge quake yipes!!

This is some local press that I have had. The last article is when I first moved to Austin from Los Angeles. The new kid in town;/ I certainly do not mind being compared to other talented artists. (even the local designers) We all have our own unique style. When Molly Sims bought several garments from me she said "have you seen the Libertine Boutique in London? The designs you make remind me of theirs" She also said she was going to wear one of the dresses on Jay Leno......I wonder if she ever did.

CATWALKING We made a front-row appearance at Pink Salon's Pink Circus of Astrological Sexuality, a celebration of the salon's fifth anniversary. With its busy parade of clients, Pink is very dear to me. Owner Deborah Carter, her daughter Farah, and their team do work that combine a fashion-forward approach with expert workmanship – not to mention it is one of the most happening places in town with a wide array of art and clothing to complement the hairstyling. A circuslike atmosphere prevailed that night (pretty much like it does there everyday), with a juggling trapeze artist, a trumpet soloist, and music by the always-wonderful Trey Lopez. The show itself was a brilliant mélange of color and textures by designer Judy Masliyah. Her exquisite work was as breathtaking as it always is, especially the vintage-fabric coats and the suits trimmed with vintage fur (why she's not at Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf, and Bendel is a mystery to me). Dawn Denton for Boudoir Queen (Pink's in-store atelier/boutique) brings her very L.A. approach to restyling vintage clothes, and those clothes are flying out the door of the salon so fast your head will spin. Local favorite Chia's playful combinations of fabrics and details charmed the large crowd.

GLAM, GLAM, GLAM Omigod, I went to the best party I've been to in a thousand years. Matthew and Katy Culmo threw themselves a fabulous shindig to celebrate the 25th birthday of their award-winning temple of fashion, By George. What an amazing success story they are, and Matthew, so slim and handsome, and Katy, ebullient and charming, were glowing with pride as the guests (a dazzling who's who of Austin's fashion, art, and business worlds) genuflected before them. I had a double-date of sorts. I arrived with the divine Deborah Carter of Pink Salon on one arm and designer Dawn Denton of Boudoir Queen on my other. Deborah wore a drop-dead chic silk dress by Judy Masliyah (available at Pink Salon), and Dawn wore her own gorgeous design in silk velvet and charmeuse that garnered compliments all night long. I showed off my chic new blond bob and a burgundy and green iridescent Thai silk shirt of my own design, but we practically looked like chopped liver next to some of the most beautiful clothes in town on the backs of some of the most glamorous citizens. The incredible Trey Lopez played the tunes that kept the pace up in the store, which was wall-to-wall people. Outside, the parking lot had been turned into a garden with a carousel bar and enormous images of By George's fashionable past projected on a two-sided screen. The food was glorious and the cocktails were lovely (even though I waited in line for 20 minutes for a martini only to be told by the hoochie-mama behind the bar that she wasn't serving martinis – only mojitos, champagne, beer, and wine – and that she didn't have any vodka. "What's that entire shelf of Grey Goose behind you?" I ventured. "I can't use that," she snarled, and flounced off to wait on someone else. I had visions of her becoming permanently injured in a horrible mojito-making accident as I went to find a more accommodating bartender). Guests included Kelly Fielding of Paper & Ink; Brian Bowers and J.D. DiFabbio of Plan B Studio; Phil Hudson, Lance Morgan, and Amy Prince of Brilliant; Clarissa Hulsey of Urban; Eddy Dean of Tribeza; Jessica Slutsky of Sabia; Garden Room manager Julia Copp with her gorgeous daughter Kara Crow, a senior UT design student; By George manager Scott Butler; Image consultant Paula Lundgren; Maristella Ostrewich of Sage Salon; Mark Ashby of Ashby-Ames Interiors; Joel Mozersky of One Eleven Design; Tony Senecal; Ted Allen; and hundreds of others just too fabulous to mention.
Article 3
A DIFFERENT QUEEN The always fabulous Pink Salon's Deborah Carter has taken another daring turn by opening an in-store Boudoir Queen boutique and atelier. Boudoir Queen designer Dawn Denton not only displays her goods – her signature doll-head purses, jewelry, accessories, restyled vintage, embellished jeans, along with original work – but her workroom is set up there as well, so you can see the designs being executed. While Denton's approach of reworking vintage garments is not particularly original (in fact it's been seriously popular in town for quite a while, thanks to the work of local designers such as Sunny Haralson and international designers such as Imitation of Christ), she possesses an eye that takes the approach to a different level, creating raggedly romantic tops and dresses. By nature, each creation is one of a kind, often utilizing combinations of beading, fringe, trim, feathers, flowers, fur, or lace, and the result can be utterly enchanting. Singer Patty Griffin is a devoted fan, wearing Boudoir Queen clothing and accessories for many public appearances. In addition to Pink Salon, Boudoir Queen can be found at the Garden Room, and other locations, and through Denton's fascinating Web site ( www.boudoirqueen.com). Her collection of rare, whimsical and radiant boudoir dolls from the 1920s is famous, and she offers some of it, as well as a hand-picked selection of vintage decor and home accessories for sale on the site. A California transplant, Denton has a lengthy history in various areas of fashion, including a stint as make-up artist to the stars, working with such celebrities as Lisa Marie Presley, Chynna Phillips, Tyra Banks, and Lauren Hutton. She is married to the former guitarist for Billy Idol, Mark Younger-Smith, who has also played for Joe Cocker, Charlie Sexton, Patti Smith, and many more. Inspired by her husband's rock & roll accomplishments, Denton's independent spirit, entrepreneurial drive, and dedication to exquisite vintage are evident in her work and should help carve quite a niche on the chic SoCo strip.

Fashionable Valentine's gifts 2/12/2004 11:04 AM By: Cheryl Bishop
Dawn Denton says she is a true romantic and not just around Valentine's Day.
You can see her girly personality in all of the lacy, feminine things in her accessory line.
The name of her company is even romantic: Boudoir Queen. The name stems from the 1920s Boudoir dolls, which were the inspiration for Denton's business.
"So, I decided to do a purse with a doll face on it which is what they used to do in the '20s, so I made the purse and I thought, 'OK I'm just going to wear it into Barney's and just see what people do,'" Denton said.
Despite the chaos the bag created and an onsite sale of $500, Denton knew she was on to a great idea.

Valentine fashion
Dawn Denton's accessories make great gifts for Valentine's Day.
Her line then grew into more romantic pieces like wristbands. The first ones she created ended up on the cover of Tribeza magazine.
Famous singing artists Patti Griffin and Emmy Lou Harris are also clients.
Denton describes one of her favorite pieces, "It's just a long glove but it's made from French 1920s lace which is really hard to find. I love it. If you went out and you just had on jeans and wore this with a pretty top, I think it makes the whole outfit."
For Valentine's Day, she has created a special neck piece made from 100 year old fabric with a special charm and heart buttons.
Her clothing line is growing too, her jeans are the newest addition.
You can send Dawn your favorite jeans and she'll also add the ruffles to your derriere. Your fashion conscious valentine will enjoy the romance of ruffles, lace and being a Boudoir Queen year round.
